Our History

On May 14, 1949, six dedicated women formed the dynamic Delta Delta Zeta Chapter of San Francisco, California. Our chapter’s founders, Elsie Atkins, Valeria Black, Eliza George, Myrtle Adams Green, Inez Henderson, and Julia Simmons-McCoy, chartered the oldest graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in Northern California. Their foresight inspired the creation of numerous chapters throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. These visionaries upheld the sorority’s founding principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood, and their legacies continue to serve as an inspiration for today’s generation of Zetas.

Since our founding, the Delta Delta Zeta Chapter has faithfully served San Francisco by hosting community baby showers, feeding the unhoused, mentoring youth through our Zeta Youth Auxiliary groups, and more. In fact, one of our founding members, Elsie Atkins, was the first Black teacher in San Francisco! On June 25, 2019 mayor London Breed recognized all of the contributions that the chapter has made to San Francisco by declaring June 25th Delta Delta Zeta Day.

We feel incredibly privileged to represent our sorority in the city that we love, and we look forward to building a finer legacy for generations to come.
